About Me

Practice Philosophy

Born in England, I emigrated to Canada when I was a child.  I speak Cantonese and English.  In 1994, I graduated from the University of Toronto (Erindale College) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, Industrial Relations and Professional Writing.  In 1999, I graduated from the University of Windsor with a Bachelor of Laws degree.  In 2001, I was called to the Bar of Ontario.  After 3 years of personal injury practice, I found my true calling in immigration law with a focus on litigation.

I am a member of the Law Society of Ontario, Mississauga Law Chambers, Mississauga Board of Trade and

The British Canadian Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

I understand the challenges of individuals and families who face increasingly complex processes and requirements to seek opportunities and achieve their goals in Canada.  My mission is to reunite families in Canada, prevent deportation, present all relevant evidence, ensure fairness in proceedings and fearlessly advocate in the best interests of clients.

Life is complex and people are busy; I take my job seriously because the work I do affects present and future generations.

Respectful, responsible and results-driven:  that's my mantra.

Practice Areas

100% of my practice is in Canadian Citizenship & Immigration law which combines applications and litigation.

I advise clients and prepare temporary/permanent residence applications to Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada:

- visitor visas and study permits

- spousal sponsorship

- parent/grandparent sponsorship

- Federal Skilled Workers

- Canadian Experience Class

- permanent resident card renewals

- citizenship

I prepare clients and advocate at hearings before the Immigration & Refugee Board of Canada and the Federal Court:

- detention reviews

- sponsorship appeals

- residency obligation appeals

- criminality appeals

- misrepresentation appeals

I prepare and accompany clients to deportation interviews at the Canada Border Services Agency.

With knowledge of applications and litigation procedures, I effectively and efficiently advise clients in complex situations to present the best evidence to decision-makers.

Making A Meaningful Difference

I commit to these principles when working with clients:

1.  I treat you with respect, dignity and civility;

2.  I ensure your legal needs are met and exceeded;

3.  I am proactive in taking steps to manage matters efficiently;

4.  I protect your personal and confidential information;

5.  I keep you informed regularly of significant steps; and

7.  I advise you throughout the immigration journey to Canada.

I serve a wide range of clients from diverse backgrounds, beliefs and abilities, and value every client relationship.  Each engagement benefits from the depth and breadth of my experience.  I approach every client with a focus on integrity, thoroughness and understanding.

I offer thorough, fearless and ethical representation.

I provide smart, sensible and practical legal solutions on how to immigrate to Canada and/or remain in Canada.

I know how to navigate through changing regulations, procedures and guidelines of Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada, Canada Border Services Agency, Immigration & Refugee Board of Canada and the Federal Court.

I advocate for you!

"Surviving the immigration roller coaster with Karen..."

"Karen is a very detailed oriented and extremely competent professional who always has her clients' best interest in mind.  We are always informed of the status of our case and Karen always makes a great effort to get back to us promptly.  What we especially appreciate about Karen is her passion, years of experience and her ability to remain calm.  We are not sure how we could have survived the ongoing emotional roller coaster ride called Canadian Immigration.  We cannot imagine what it would be like if we had to do this alone.  We would highly recommend Karen to anyone seeking help with any immigration issue.  You will be in great and competent hands with Karen.  We could never have gotten this far with Canadian Immigration without Karen's help, direction and compassion."

- Robert and Gina Burke

"...Karen's advice is invaluable to my family and me"

"Karen is friendly and courteous.  She is thorough, competent and pays attention to details.  She answered all my questions patiently and gave me correct, timely legal advice.  Her legal opinion has been invaluable for me and my family." - Madhu D.

"A great human being and a great lawyer!"

"Karen's dedication and genuine passion for helping her clients, as far as I can tell from my experience, goes way above and beyond what I expected.  I am extremely thankful for the outcome and Karen's guidance in my case.  I was totally at ease with her from the first time I spoke with her (she made sure of that), and therefore whenever I will need any professional immigration legal services again, I will have zero hesitation in contacting her again.  What was more interesting about Karen, in addition to her hard work and professionalism is this:  after completing work for me and weeks had gone by, Karen still found time to check on me during the passage of Hurricane Irma.  This is because I live in the Caribbean within the hurricane belt and the island that I was on was in the path of that Hurricane.  I was genuinely surprised and thankful for this kind of concern.  This alone in my books makes Karen a GREAT human being in addition to her being a great Immigration Lawyer.  I highly recommend Karen without any hesitation whatsoever to everyone who needs a great immigration lawyer." - John Nazarius Aristide
